Feel the Buzzzzz…

I gave a lecture to an EMBA class last Sunday. Below is my presentation.

Today a group of 10 students from Tongji University came to visit us in the office. They are part of a group called VCube that tries to groom students with an entrepreneurial spirit. I shared with them my experiences running SocialBuzz so far and talked to them about starting a company in general.

I actually recommended to them that they didn’t try to start their own business ventures shortly after graduation. My point was that they needed to build up valuable experiences, skills and connections before they tried to start a business, which was harder than most people realize. Obviously there were success stories of people starting a company at a young age and becoming rather successful, but I warned them that these stories were the exception and that for every success story, there were many many more stories of failed start-ups.

Clearly I’m not an authority on running a successful start up because I’m new to this myself, too. However, it was good to talk to these kids and I hope I provided some insights on the matter.

What is Barcamp?

BarCamp is an ad-hoc un-conference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from attendees.

If there’s no surprise, I plan on attending and am thinking about holding a discussion on entrepreneurship and running an Internet startup.

As a company helping people leverage social media, it would be a crime not to use social media ourselves.  So naturally, we’ve created a company page on Facebook.  Please go there and be a fan.  I really hate using the word, “fan,” but I guess it makes sense for certain situation.  If it were up to me, I’d use the word, supporter.
